ABOUT Bettina: One of my favorite poems is “Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann, and it starts with the verse “Go placidly amid the noises and the haste, and remember what peace there is in silence. As far as possible… nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune, but do not distress yourself with dark imaginings…”
Throughout my 16 year career as both an art teacher and school counselor, it has been my mission to help others find their unique strengths through both misfortunate times as well as the successful days… life is full of challenges for each of us, and as a counselor I work to facilitate a therapeutic environment that builds a relationship of trust and fosters a sense of hope. I believe that being nonjudgmental, having empathy, working with positive regard, and collaborating with my clients is absolutely crucial to writing life stories filled with chapters of hope and resilience.
Growing hope and nurturing strength have been an important part of my own life story. We have an 18 year old son with Down Syndrome and various other needs, a twice-exceptional gifted daughter who attends SLU, and two neurodivergent young adult sons. These experiences allow me to walk uniquely alongside my clients' living neurodiverse experiences themselves.
I have knowledge as an educator, school counselor and as a parent when working with IEPS, 504s, school collaboration, various community services and managing self-directed services. I work with clients of various populations and age groups, and have a Person-centered therapy style that integrates narrative approaches, mindfulness and other differentiated styles to meet each client's unique needs best. I have confidence in the client's ability to re-author their own life stories while building upon their strengths, resilience and gaining skills to assist with emotional regulation. It is important to acknowledge and truly hear the stories that brought my clients to where they are now, and to assist them through that exploration while simultaneously building skills to grow, heal and mindfully live in the present with intentionality and grace for their best life.
