Gifted and Twice-Exceptional

Gifted and Twice-Exceptional (2e)

PictureCounseling for gifted and twice-exceptional is available in-person or virtually. Don't let geography keep you from getting the help you need. (Limited to residents of Missouri.)
Gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) learners have both unique learning needs and specific social and emotional characteristics that need support. Concerns like anxiety, depression, and social relationships have to be viewed through the lens of their cognitive ability to see the factors influencing their well-being.

Unlimited Potential Counseling & Education Center was started by Emily Kircher-Morris, a nationally-recognized speaker, podcaster, and author on the topics of giftedness, twice-exceptionality, and neurodiversity. The need for support for these unique individuals has been the force that has grown Unlimited Potential Counseling & Education Center from a solo-practitioner office to one bursting at the seams with mental health counselors and tutors for gifted and 2e learners. Several of the other counselors at the office have been trained through Emily to support these unique kids, teens, and adults.

The Neurodiversity Podcast

A Talk with a 2e Pioneer: The history of the term “twice-exceptionality” is not a long one. On episode 65 Emily Kircher-Morris talks with Dr. Susan Baum about her early experience with “green” kids, and how the term twice-exceptional was born. They also discuss ideas for parents and educators that will help them guide 2e kids to success.

The Stealth Nature of Dyslexia: Dyslexia is often misunderstood, and educators and parents sometimes mistake it for a simple reading deficit. Dr. Dan Peters joins Emily Kircher-Morris to talk about dyslexia, as well as dysgraphia, and dyscalculia; their indications, where to go for diagnosis, and ways to help your child adapt. The basics of, and the often stealth nature of, dyslexia, on episode 59.

Understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance: What is Pathological Demand Avoidance and how does it manifest among the neurodiverse? What can we do to educate parents, teachers, and counselors about how to approach it? Understanding demand avoidance can completely transform the way you look at a child. Harry J. Thompson joins Emily Kircher-Morris for this important discussion about PDA, on episode 54.

Executive Functioning - The Building Blocks of Success: How can educators, counselors, and parents help neuro-diverse kids learn executive functioning skills? Gifted and twice-exceptional kids often lag with this skill development, so we’ll talk about tools and techniques you can use to help kids grow. Our guest is Brendan Mahan, an ADHD/executive functioning consultant and speaker, a veteran educator, and the host of a podcast called ADHD Essentials. Executive functioning, on episode 45.
