Online Video Counseling FAQs
What technology do I need for online video counseling (teletherapy)?
You will need reliable internet access and a computer, smartphone, or tablet with a camera and microphone. What platform will be used for online video counseling (teletherapy)? Your counselor will send you a link through Zoom that will connect you at the time of your counseling session. Do I need a Zoom account to access my session? No. You may be prompted to install a plugin (depending on your hardware) for the video conferencing software to work. This process takes about 1 minute and is automatic the first time you use Zoom. In future sessions, you will not need to install this plugin again, as long as you are using the same hardware. What should I expect for my intake session for myself? For my child? Prior to your intake session, you’ll be asked to complete paperwork about your history and present situation. Your counselor will talk to you to find out more about your specific situation and you will set several treatment goals through this session that you will work toward during your future counseling sessions. If your child is beginning counseling, the first session will have three components. The first part of the session will be between you and the counselor to discuss your observations and concerns about your son or daughter. The second part of the session will be between your child and the counselor and will be spent developing rapport and getting to know each other. You will rejoin the session toward the end of the session for a debriefing and to discuss future sessions and plans. How does privacy and confidentiality work during online video counseling (teletherapy)? Our counselors conduct our online video counseling sessions in a private space from our office or their home. We use white noise machines, headphones, or other tools to guarantee your conversation is kept private. A quiet room in your house with a door that closes, your car, or the porch/patio are all ideas for you to find a space that will allow you to speak freely to your counselor. Additionally, using headphones also adds another layer of privacy to the conversation. How does online video counseling (teletherapy) work with kids? Our counselors are able to use creative means to engage your son or daughter in counseling sessions. Through screen sharing, counselors can share resources or collaborate on projects with your child. We can use automated online apps to play games that require rolling dice or drawing cards. Or, your counselor may use parallel activity with your child, like coloring together or working on individual projects and sharing their work. During every session, we are finding new ways to take the strategies we use in person and implement them virtually. What if my child is too young to participate in online video counseling (teletherapy)? We are happy to conduct a family session with you and your child together, working to develop communication, improve relationships, and create strategies to help you through this time. Additionally, we are able to focus specifically on helping you as a parent by holding sessions without your child participating. |
